You know how the old saying goes – sustainability starts at home. It’s probably not one of the most popular idioms out there, but it rings true nonetheless.
It’s becoming more and more common to check the green credentials of products before buying them, especially over the past few years, where things like climate change and deforestation have become key topics of conversation. After all, you don’t want to be judged for having a home that gobbles up resources like an angry bear, do you?
Didn’t think so. The home is one of the best places you can make eco-conscious decisions, so here are some sustainable products you should start using at home.
In the bathroom
Did you know that paper toilet roll sat in your bathroom is contributing to deforestation? It might look innocent, but that roll of tissue has a dark secret hidden between its sheets…
Paper products cause the chopping down of around 27,000 trees a day, so what can you do? Switch to something else, like a Bamboo Roll, instead!
Bamboo is much more sustainable, grows faster and causes less carbon emissions than trees. Plus – it doesn’t mind being made into toilet paper. Trees do though, they hate it.
In the kitchen
While they may be a little more expensive, 100% biodegradable bin bags are a must-have for those who are trying to be a little more eco conscious.
These tend to be much more planet-kind than the usual kind, mainly because they fully biodegrade after around 3 months, rather than sticking around like the usual bin bags on the market.
They might cost extra, but it’s worth it, right?
In your living room
Plastic waste can be fashionable, who knew?
You can now buy rugs for your home which are made from 100%, premium quality recycled plastic! Don’t worry, it won’t look like you’ve got a used, crumpled up water bottle on your living room floor.
Far from it, in fact these one from Fab Habitat are super stylish and would belong in any well-furnished abode.
In your wardrobe
The average pair of trainers emits 12.5kg of carbon, so if you’re serious about reducing your literal carbon footprint, you might want to switch out your standard shoes.
Invest in a pair of eco-friendly, ethical trainers and you could save around 5kg of carbon. Allbirds are an excellent option, they’re made from natural materials farmed using strict sustainable practices.
Other materials used include recycled plastic bottles, which are used to make things like the shoelaces! Not only that, but they’re also super comfortable and stylish, so you don’t have to sacrifice style for the sake of sustainability.
These are just a few ways to build a more planet-friendly home – by making just a few small changes, you might be able to make a big difference in the long run. And even if you don’t, you can feel better knowing that you at least tried to!
