How to Show Love to Someone Struggling with Addiction

Dealing with a person struggling with addiction can be hard. There will be episodes where they want to withdraw, they get irritated, and such. Showing love and support to such a person is important. You will be playing a big part to help them sober up without even knowing it. So, how do you show them, love, without compromising your life? It is possible to have a healthy relationship with an addicted person. Here is how.

Learn About their Addiction and Recovery

The first thing you need to do to support your loved one is to learn about addiction, what happens and what they need to recover. What does heroin look like? What are the symptoms of a person using heroin? How can you help them recover? What are the available support programs for such people? These are some of the things you should know if you want to help the person. In the end, they will appreciate your effort to help them get better.

Show That you Value Them

Self-esteem has a strong relationship with alcohol and drug addiction. A person with low self-esteem may start using drugs for various reasons. On the other hand, a person who uses drugs might develop low self-esteem. This is not your fault. The best thing you can do is to encourage them. Let them know through your actions that you love and value them. Compliment them and keep them in your circle.

Don’t Neglect Yourself

You should know that there is no way you will help a person struggling with addiction if you are not okay. So, the first and most important thing you should do is take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. You need to be stable in all three aspects to know what to do. Meet your needs and live a happy life. This is the only way you will help another person who is in need.

Be Patient

When trying to maintain boundaries, you might be tempted to give up on the person. People who are addicted to drugs can be unreliable, hurt you and manipulate you. They will ask for money to support their craving, or might not even care about what they do. A person can relapse many times. With such things, you may get frustrated and lose hope in the person. Stay positive, and don’t give up on them. If they hurt you too much, try keeping some distance while still showing love.

Provide a Safe and Sober Environment

Many people relapse or continue to use drugs because they don’t have a safe environment. The environment an addicted person lives in plays a vital role in their life. So, if you can, provide them with basic things like food, clothes, and shelter. Most alcoholics and drug addicts struggle with malnutrition and homelessness. So, providing them with basic items is vital. If the people they spend time with are the result of the addiction, try helping them to change their friends.

Conclusion

These are simple ways you can support a person struggling with addiction without going out of your way. Such a person is at a critical moment of their life and needs someone sober to guide them. So be part of them but set boundaries.
